Obstetrician-gynecologist’s and urologist’s perspective on the treatment of cystitis: the need for a multidisciplinary approach

Cystitis in women is one of the most common urological diseases and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Depending on the stage of a woman’s life, her gynecological status, including hormonal levels, the condition of the vaginal microflora, and anatomical features, has a significant impact on the course of cystitis and its treatment. Underestimation of gynecological factors is sometimes a cause of treatment failure. The clinical features of cystitis in women of reproductive age and in perimenopause are discussed in the article. The need to assess estrogen status and vaginal flora are substantiated. In addition, current principles of therapy, including the use of nitrofurans, particularly potassium furazidin (Furamag®), are outlined.
